BONSAI CARE - Soil & Potting

Soil Quality
  • Soil quality is determined by the amount of drainage it permits, the amount of water it retains and allowance for air spaces to let the roots breathe.
  • The mixes for bonsai soil are composed of three elements:
    • Water holding elements such as compost, peat moss, and vermiculite.
    • Inorganic structural elements such as sand, perlite, decomposed granite, and pumice.
    • Organic structural elements which can hold some water and nutrients: fir and pine barks, wood chips, etc.
When to Repot?
  • In general, young and small bonsai require repotting every two or three years; older and larger specimens need less than that.
  • Slow passage of water or slow growth indicates a need for repotting.
  • A Hardened soil surface is indicative of condensed roots that may need repotting.
